Polyester gets a bad reputation it doesn't always deserve. Here's what it's actually good at, and where it falls short.
Where polyester wins
- Lightweight: it doesn't add much weight of its own, so more of what you're carrying is your stuff, not the bag.
- Holds shape: polyester resists stretching and sagging over time better than some natural fabrics.
- Price: it's part of why a well-made polyester bag can cost less than a leather equivalent without cutting corners on construction.
Where it's not the right choice
If you want a bag that develops a worn-in patina over years - the leather-jacket effect - polyester won't give you that. It looks the same on day 500 as day 5, for better or worse.
The honest tradeoff
Polyester is a practical, everyday material choice, not a luxury one, and it's not trying to be. If what you want is something light that holds its shape and doesn't demand special care, that's exactly the tradeoff it's making.
